FlashTracer 2.1.0

Thanks to Chad Upton who sent me some suggestions on how to improve FlashTracer I recently updated this extension adding some new features beside those already installed.
Now it is possible to define rules ( using the options panel ), which allow you to style the output messages (defining font-weight, font-style, color and text underline); they can work also like a filter to discard all the messages which don’t match the rules.

Here a screenshot of the new rules panel:

I also took advantage of this update to write the extension from scratch. It was my first extension and so the code wasn’t so clear, moreover I learnt how to use xul commands and observers.
I tested this extension on Vista, Ubuntu 7.10 and OSX 10.4. Here some screenshots of the running extension on those different OS:

Note. In some case you should first remove the mm.cfg file first. In Windows and linux it is placed into the user folder, in OSX you can find it under “/Library/Application Support/Macromedia”

Install now
P.S. Remember that you need the flash player debug.

UPDATE: A new flash tracer called fbtracer has been released. This new extension is integrated into Firebug. Read more here

    Hm, the url is wrong, and while it’s easy to correct, apparently it installs Flash Tracer 2.0.1 and not 2.1.0. The options are different.

  • Oh sorry, I corrected both the link and the .xpi file.
    Now it should be ok.

  • Tim

    Very nice, thank you Alessandro!

  • Hi,
    I cant make it working. Ive installed ext and debug flash player but nothing happens when I open my site where I have trace outputs. I can locate mm.cfg in the folder where you wrote that should be.
    Also in preferences pane in general settings tab there’s place to browse for output file. In this location I can’t find any file 🙁 . please help because ext looks great I’d like to use it .
    I work on mac osx 10.4.11 (intel)

    Hi, thanks for this upgrade, it is a great evolution and i like it very much. I have found that when we change the font family the extension changes to the type chosen but after it return to the initial type(monospace).
    Now a suggestion, could the extension have the option of instead of applying the style to the all line, applying only to the words recognized by the regular expression.

  • Shemesh

    great work!
    i have installed this latest version.
    the ‘Filter’ is not preserved after closing, this is somehow annoying ’cause i have to retype this Filter each time i open.

  • Thank you for the feedback!
    I’ve updated to version 2.1.1 and now filter text is preserved (also the filter textbox is highlighted if the input regular expression is not valid) and the font-family list display the current used font.

  • Great !
    BTW, I’m also on OSX 10.4 and can’t find the mm.cfg at the path you note. Mine is in the home folder. Maybe because of using Flex Builder ?
    A little request : can you make your extension compatible with Firefox 3 beta ?

  • still can’t make it working. is something strange in my osx?? any suggestions?

  • Alessandro Crugnola

    yes, it could depend on Flex Builder.. I try to investigate and I’ll update

  • ok, try to update the extension, but first remove the mm.cfg created with the previous version, if any, under
    /Library/Application Support/Macromedia
    Now it should be created into home folder in osx too

  • Sorry if I made a mistake but I can’t get any reference that say the mm.cfg should be in the osx home forlder. My bad.
    Here are the correct path for all the platform :
    OSX -MacHD:Library:Application Support:Macromedia:mm.cfg
    Windows XP -C:\Documents and Settings\username\mm.cfg
    Windows 2000 -C:\mm.cfg
    Linux -home/username/mm.cfg
    Flashlog is unusable with that path.

  • Arf, no. Both path works now.
    Simply discard my comments.
    Flashlog works nicely on osx here. Great works, thanks for the additions..

  • The encoding preference seems not working.
    I’ve choosed UTF-8 and it appears in the logger as iso. I’ve verified, my flashlog.txt is well encoded in UTF-8.
    One more thing, the more output you get, the more FlashTracer takes Firefox CPU and block the Flash player rendering. Is it a known issue ?

  • still nothing. It does not create a mm.cfg file anywhere. I used Spotlight and it showed nothing. When I open ext panel I can read:
    “using: /Users/michajarocinski/mm.cfg
    flashlog.txt file does’t exists. Open settings dialog first.”
    Of course there is no flashlog.txt file or even such folder as Logs in the directory you specified.
    I don’t know what is going on. Is it my fault?

  • Alessandro Crugnola

    open the settings dialog and create the flashlog.txt in the specified path

  • @farmazone: create the mm.cfg file in MacHD/Library/Application Support/Macromedia/ with:

    TraceOutPutFileName=/Users/{username}/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/Logs/flashlog.txt

    Make sure that flashlog.txt is there in the above location (if not, create one).
    Should work like charm – działa! 🙂 (at least it did for me!)
    Thanks Sephiroth! It’s a great extension!

  • Ok. I did it. mm.cfg showed up in home dir and that note from debug window of ext disappeared but still no output and flashlog.txt is empty. Should I publish swf file with ‘Permit debugging’ on? I tried and nothing but popup with “where is the debugger or host application running?”

  • todd

    awesome! do you know the path to the .cfg file under Vista?

  • tasovi

    I can’t see my traces either! I am working on win xp and I have the newsest debug player installed! whats teh problem?

  • SolidNick

    I’ve the same problem of Tasovi.
    I can’t see my trace
    No error and flashlog.txt is empty
    I am working on win xp, flash 8, Firefox 2, flash player debug installed
    Help me, please !

  • finally I did it :). I put mm.cfg file into /Library/Application Support/Macromedia/ directory
    TraceOutPutFileName in mm.cfg on OSX should be: TraceOutPutFileName=:Users:{username}:Library/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player:Logs:flashlog.txt
    colons instead of slashes – that’s works for me 🙂

  • Pz

    grazie mille

  • And display warnings checkbox doesnt work on my mac. 🙁 same effect with on and off

  • Hi I would like to know where the “styles” are saved, so in our company all the developers start to standardize their traces and all use the same stylesheet.

  • lab9

    can’t succeed to make it work. mm.cfg get instaled on a network directory (U:) and not on C: directory.
    It seems flash tracer succeed to load it, but nothing get traced except “using: U:\ mm.cfg” which disappear immediatly.
    I’m on XP, I’ve created the flashlog file in the right place, installed the latest version of flash debugger and still it doesn’t work.

  • Alessandro Crugnola

    Hi, the “styles” and everything else is saved in the Firefox registry (see it by typing about:config in the address bar)

  • Hi, the charset setting has no effect.
    in main.js line 573:
    case “common.charset”:
    charset = getCharPref( preferences, “common.charset”, trace_charset);
    modification = null;
    filesize = -1;
    change to:
    case “common.charset”:
    trace_charset = getCharPref( preferences, “common.charset”, trace_charset);
    modification = true;
    filesize = -1;

  • Chris

    I’m sorry, but version 2 is horrible. It doesn’t work at all. I’m running FF 2.0 and only Flashtracer 1.3.1 works for me.

  • noclegi

    Hello. Thanks for this upgrade. I’ve updated to version 2, but it doesn’t work well. There are some mistakes. Is there a better version yet?

  • damo

    Hi all,
    I’im using an ubuntu 7.10 with flash player 9 debug 9.0.48. So i’m looking for my flashlog.txt but i couldn’t find it in my ~/.macromedia/Flash_Player/Logs/flashlog.txt

    When I install FT 2.1.2 on Ffox, it never installs, I am asked to restart firefox , and after I restart it i go to the Add-ons window and FT shows up there with a notification: This addon will be installed the next time FFox is restarted.
    FT 2.0.0 works fine tough!

  • Grizzlor

    I have the same Problem as “lab9” my mm.cgf is at U:\mm.cfg and it works. A policyfiles.txt was created at “c:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\xxx\Anwendungsdaten\Macromedia\Flash Player\Logs\” but no flashlog.txt. I use 9.0.115 debug player on German Win XP
    Can anyone help me please!?

  • David Spurr

    I’ve just upgraded to the newest version (2.1.5) and the output no longer handles whitespace characters (such as newline, tab) where it did previously.
    This makes it difficult to see what is going on sometimes and the whitespace handling was a benefit of the previuos FlashTracer.

  • JonnyR

    Excellent plugin Alessandro, any chance you will update this for the new Beta 4 release of Firefox 3.0?

  • Hey lads and ladies!
    This really is a great tool, but after upgrading to the new version its just constantly telling me that every single function is undefined or not a function… Stuff like this:
    Warning: onMouseWheel is not a function.
    I mean, that is an internal Flash function. How can I stop the incessant warnings? Any advice appreciated!

  • Hi, I wonder if exclude statements work as filters? This doesn’t seem to work:
    to exclude lines that have “curTime” as their first word

  • Alessandro

    Yes, the exclude statement works for me.
